“Toad Suck, Arkansas – Hello!” Celebrity Spotlight: Larry King

Bankruptcy affects people of every age, creed, sex or ethnicity from every part of the country. Even celebrities both loved and disliked have their financial problems and depend on the bankruptcy laws to get out from under crippling debt.

From Wikipedia:

Larry King (born Lawrence Harvey Zeiger; November 19, 1933) is an American television and radio host, whose work has been recognized with awards including two Peabodys and 10 Cable ACE Awards.

King was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Jennie (Gitlitz), a garment worker who was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Aaron Zeiger, a restaurant owner and defense-plant worker who was born in Kolomyia, Ukraine.

King was educated at Lafayette High School, a public high school in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. His father died at 44 of a heart attack and his mother had to go on welfare to support her two sons. King was greatly affected by his father’s death, and he lost interest in school. After graduating from high school, he worked to help support his mother and did not go to college. From an early age, however, he had wanted to go into radio

In 2014 King was asked about his legacy. King, referring to himself, said “His life led to more people having information that they didn’t have before, and he taught us a lot and we learned a lot and enjoyed it at the same time. He brought a great deal of pride to his business.”

King and his wife Sharon filed for bankruptcy in 1978. At the time he was earning $26,000.00 per year from the Mutual Radio Network. He owed $352,000 – $14,000 in gambling debts (the Hialeah racetrack), $90,387.00 to a “private lender” and $55.00 to a florist in Miami Florida.
